Adult Learning is part of  Shetland Islands Council's Education and Social Care Deparment. We provide informal learning opportunities in response to local and national priorities.  This includes courses to improve Adult Literacy and Numeracy and English for speakers of other languages.  In all of our work we aim to engage 'hard to reach' learners and widen participation in learning.  The following lists current areas of work:

Our programmes include:

Community based adult learning

A programme of community based evening classes and workshops throughout Shetland. These include, art, crafts, music, languages, computing, cookery and active classes.

Communications, Numeracy and Employability  

Individual support and classes for adults who want to improve their reading, writing or number skills or need help with applications, interview skills or employability.

English for Speakers of Other languages

Classes and individual support for adults who speak English as an additional language including Welcome Point Drop In, family and workplace learning.

Building skills in Adult Learning

We provide training and support for people to share skills in their communities. We also train volunteers to support adults to improve their reading, writing and number skills in a range of settings.

Engaging New Learners

We  run projects which are aimed at getting people who are less likely to take part involved in Adult Learning.  Current projects include:

Independent Living Tenants Group - Supports adults with learning disabilities to express their opinions about their tenancies

Offender Literacies Programme  Supports offenders to improve their communication and employability skills, gain core skills qualifications

Return to Learn courses   Support adults who have been out of formal learning for some time, who may have low qualifications or confidence , to get ready for learning at college or in the workplace.

Lifeskills workshops  Support young people to develop critical thinking skills to make good financial choices and to improve their employability
