Online Book Group: An Introduction to The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

Ref: 3653

Do you enjoy reading and would like to get more out of it?
Have you wondered about joining a book group, but haven't felt confident enough?
Then this class is for you!
We will read and discuss the Scottish literary classic, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson.  You don't need to have read the book before, and you don't need to know anything about literary criticism.  We will talk about plot, characters, setting, narrative and language and other literary techniques. By the end of the class, you will have increased your knowledge and enhanced your enjoyment of reading.

You will need a copy of the text, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson.

About your tutor, Margaret Stuart:

Having graduated from Glasgow University, more years ago than I am willing to disclose, I worked with two major firms in transport and retail before returning to my first love; English Literature and English Language. I qualified as an English Language teacher and taught in the community for over a year before taking up a lecturing post in Further Education where among other things, I taught literature as part of Communication.

Over the years we covered the works of many writers but one of the most popular with students was Robert Louis Stevenson, and in particular his novella “The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde”. I think that is because, although written well over a century ago, the modern reader can relate to its themes and plot.

I love reading and sharing my enthusiasm for books and encouraging others to get as much enjoyment out of them as I do.

When it comes to reading, I’m with C.S. Lewis:

You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me
