Welcome to Adult Learning

Adult Learning is part of Shetland Island Council’s Community Development Service. Whatever your starting point, Adult Learning is here to support you to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to achieve your goals and thrive in your personal, community, family and working life.

Our approach to learning builds around the interests and motives of the learner, and recognises each person’s unique strengths, life experiences and hopes for the future. Our learning is flexible, informal and at a pace to suit individual needs. You can learn on your own alongside a qualified tutor, as part of a small group or join others in our range of classes. There are no tests or exams.

Learning is life-long: we never stop learning new things, whatever our age.

Learning is life-wide: learning new skills has a positive impact on our whole lives by increasing knowledge and building confidence.

Learning is learner centred: you decide what to learn and how you want to participate.
