International Shetland

During 2008, Adult Learning developed a programme to celebrate Shetland's cultural diversity. A range of events Enlarge Image was organised in the community and at Shetland's Welcome Point with the theme of 'International Shetland'.

The aims of the project were to:

  • Raise awareness and understanding between cultures
  • Celebrate the similarities and differences between cultures
  • To encourage community cohesion

Over 150 people took part in various events, including dance, cookery, calligraphy and a reading and music event. These sessions aimed to develop the confidence of learners to share their culture and skills with others.

What Difference did it Make?

  • The diversity of Shetland was well and truly celebrated!
  • Several social networks were formed as a result
  • Migrants gained the confidence to share their skills
  • some progressed to delivering adult learning classes

What the Learners Said:

"I had no idea there were so many nationalities in Shetland. I liked hearing all the different languages - when can we have more?"

"We had a lot of fun trying out different dances"

We continue to develop opportunities for migrants  to share their skills with the Shetland Community and to experience aspects of Shetland's culture.  Over the past year we have supported migrants to share their craft, dance and language skills as part of the evening class programme.  Speakers of other languages have also been encouraged to take part in Shetland College's Culture club events such as a trip to Mousa and finding out more about Up Helly Aa.

Participants in the Creative Writing class for speakers of other languages recently put on a topical play at the Welcome Point.  Welcome Point provides a meeting place for migrants to share a bit of their culture and find out more about  activities and events and how to get involved in them.

We plan to hold further events in the coming year to celebrate diversity.
