In 2008/9 Adult Learning took part in an innovative programme called Changing Scenes.

Changing scenes is a unique employability programme that uses film making, media and the arts to motivate people who are unemployed to build the skills that can help them get into work. Over a 4 week period learners aimed to build various employability skills, including organisational skills, team building and confidence building through preparing and filming video clips.

Although the programme was challenging for the learners they managed to complete the film and also found that it helped to emphasise, not what they couldn't do but what they could.

You can see a short video made by the project at: www.changing-scenes.co.uk/the-films.asp

Here is what two learners had to say about how this programme made a difference to their lives:

Learner A was referred to this project by Jobcentre+. He was afraid of group work and others but settled in well. After completing the course he continued to attend Adult Learning and concentrating on communication and interview skills. After a period of years out of work, he undertook a Computing Refurbishment course which gave him confidenc to go on and apply for and secure a job in Social care. His family report that 'he's a changed man' and his confidence is greatly improved.

Learner B was referred by Criminal Justice. He was very keen and contributed well. He continued his learning after the project completed and went on to gain his first ever qualifications in core skills. He said "this is a life changing experience. Adult Learning staff are the first people who have said I CAN do things!"

The service has now built up experience of using film as a medium to support learning and is using film in its work with offenders, with English for speakers of other languages and in other projects.  This year we continue to develop the use of film as a medium to support learning.  Watch out for further news and opportunities.
