Capacity Building
In Scotland, we have adopted a social practice model of literacies. That means we design programmes around the literacy practices that are relevant to adults' everyday lives. Literacy is involved in about everything we do, from writing a birthday card, to completing complex forms, from filling in time sheets, to having the confidence and skills to deliver a presentation.
Adult Learning offers a national training programme for Volunteer Literacy Tutors. Tutors work individually with adult learners to improve their reading, writing and number skills.
Additionally, we have been developing capacity to support adult literacies in other agencies. Workers from Housing, Youth Services, Independent Living , Drugs and Alcohol Services, Support Training and the Moving On project have taken part in the Introductory Training in Adult Literacies Learning course and they can now provide support to their clients with everyday literacies tasks.
